Take a walk on the calm side |

There's not much in the world more fun than going out, well-clad (or scantily-clad, depending) against the elements, on a sharp day in winter or under seething summer sun, to amble aimlessly far from cities.
'Far from the beaten path' is, I suppose, a more traditional version, but on the whole I'm prepared to let bramble-bushes and precipices be, and stick to walking where other people have walked before. Sometimes it helps to have someone walking beside me to talk to; sometimes it's more fun just to enjoy the freedom to wander wherever I choose.
And, of course, there's the opportunity to take lots, and lots, and lots of photographs - and, if I take enough photographs, I can hope to have some that are worth showing to the world. Of course, sorting through lots of photos to find the pretty ones isn't entirely trivial: here are just a few shots (the decorations at the top of the page also expand as full-size pictures), and I'll put up more and prettier ones when I can find them

On the left, the algae-covered rock marking the southmost point of mainland Europe, at the very tip of Greece. On the right, one of the several Byzantine churches at the fortress of Mistra, part of Byzantium which held out against the Turks for a decade even when Constantinople had fallen - the sort of place Guy Gavriel Kay might have set a novel. | |

A couple of photos taken while going around Kentmere in the Lake District, during an idyllic few days walking in Spring 2003. The weather was perfect; I suspect few would immediately think of Kentmere as the location of the photo to the right. | ![]() |
